Keep your muscle while you lose weight

When you lose a lot of weight, some of it comes from muscle. That’s true however you’re losing it, including with weight loss medication. Strength training and enough protein are the best tools we have to hold on to as much of it as possible, and that’s what I coach.

Why muscle matters

Muscle is what keeps you strong for everyday life, from carrying the shopping to getting up off the floor. It supports your joints, and it makes it much easier to keep the weight off once you get there.

The number on the scale doesn’t tell you what you’re losing. Two people can lose the same amount and end up in very different places, depending on how much muscle they keep.

How I coach it

Sessions are one to one at West 4 Gym in Chiswick.

Strength training, two or three times a week

Built around the big movements, with the weight going up gradually. If your energy is low on a given day, we adjust the session rather than skip it.

Protein first

Appetite can drop a lot while you’re losing weight, so we make sure the food you do eat is working for you, starting with enough protein.

Progress you can see

Every session is logged in my coaching app, so your strength is tracked week by week and we can see your progress as the scale comes down.

Working alongside your GP or prescriber

I coach the training and food side. Anything medical, like your dose or side effects, stays with them.

Planning for what comes next

Keeping the weight off is often harder than losing it, especially when medication stops. Leaving with strength, a routine you can keep up and the know how to carry on puts you in a much better position.

Is it safe to train while I’m on weight loss medication?
For most people, yes, and exercise is usually recommended alongside it. I’ll ask about your health and any medication before we start, and if anything needs checking we’ll speak to your GP or prescriber first.
What if my appetite is really low?
That’s common. We focus on getting enough protein in first, keep sessions manageable on low energy days, and adjust as we go.
Do I need to be on medication for this?
No. Everything on this page applies to anyone who’s losing weight.
How often should I train?
Two or three strength sessions a week is a good place to start. We’ll build it around your week and how you’re feeling.
